Overview

Cases in Pediatric Occupational Therapy: Assessment and Intervention is designed to provide a comprehensive collection of case studies that reflects the scope of current pediatric occupational therapy practice. Drs. Susan Cahill and Patricia Bowyer, along with more than 50 contributors, begin each section with an introduction to the practice setting and direct instructors and students to additional resources for more information. The text includes more than 40 cases that include client overviews, relevant history and background information; information regarding the analysis of occupational performance; information about progress in treatment; and questions to promote the development and refinement of clinical reasoning skills. Cases are presented from various practice settings, including: - The neonatal intensive care unit - Early intervention - School systems - Outpatient services - Hospital-based settings - Mental health settings - Community settings Each case included in Cases in Pediatric Occupational Therapy is written by professionals with first-hand experience working with pediatric clients from the specific practice setting, and it aligns with the occupational therapy process represented in the AOTA's Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, Third Edition. In addition, supplemental information, photographs, and video clips help to bring the cases to life. Instructors in educational settings can visit www.efacultylounge.com for additional materials to be used in the classroom. Cases in Pediatric Occupational Therapy will guide occupational therapy students, faculty, and practitioners through effective clinical decision making during the selection of assessment procedures and the development of client-centered and context- specific intervention plans.

Description:

This book offers a variety of case studies in pediatric occupational therapy to illustrate different approaches within a practice area.
Purpose: The consistent format for each practice setting is helpful and the real-life examples are particularly useful for new practitioners as well as for practitioners entering a new area of practice.
Audience: The vast array of author expertise is evident in the in-depth information for each case study. These case studies could easily be used for students as well as for practitioners entering new areas of practice. In my experience as a practitioner in various pediatric and adolescent settings, the references for these case studies as well as the intervention strategies are credible and useful.
Features: The case studies cover a wide array of pediatric practice and the inclusion of community-based and mental health settings is particularly timely and helpful. While the use of the important concept of occupational performance does not seem to be consistent with the definition of occupational performance used by many practitioners, the use of the Occupational Profile (OTPF-3) is accurately used. Even though client factors are emphasized, most case studies offer adequate information to translate to a client's occupational roles. I wish that the School Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (School AMPS) could have been used in one of the case studies for school-based practice, as the School AMPS offers a uniquely occupation-centered approach to evaluations of students.
Assessment: This is my first exposure to the use of pediatric case studies for such a wide range of occupational therapy practice. I highly recommend it for new practitioners and practitioners entering new practice areas. I will be using it as I mentor new employees in my primary practice area of NICU and early intervention.
